Is Big Better in FM?

The failure of Carillion, followed by Interserve recently going into administration has highlighted the shortcomings of the large outsourcing companies that try to be all things to all clients.

“It is clear these companies are trying to cover too much ground,” says Andrew Philpot, Managing Director of TemcoUK Facility Services. “Interserve are providing an extraordinary range of services, from the maintenance of military bases on the Falkland Islands, through school meals to probationary services. It is very difficult to maintain the highest standards and a bespoke service to clients across such a broad spectrum.”

Tender structure

Andrew notes that some larger organisations need to consider the consequences carefully before structuring tendering processes that favour these companies, as attempts to bring too many services under one single contract can result in the exclusion of high quality, cost effective specialists.

“We have noted a marked uptick in interest from companies that have had enough of large outsourcers,” Adds Andrew, “They cite multiple reasons, but invariably they raise lack of quality as a primary reason. Usually this comes down to poor management resulting in lack of attention to detail and high staff turnover. Some did not even know who their manager was, which I found incredible.

Rigid systems

This led onto complaints about the lack of flexibility in quality audits, forcing clients into a one size fits all framework. Amongst other things I was pleased to assure them that TemcoUK has a highly flexible tablet based audits that are tailored to each building and client.

In the end, SMEs are just more agile, faster to improve services, faster to react, faster to resolve situations, whilst the layers of cost control in these large organisations slow them down. I genuinely think that the tide is turning on large outsourcers, and not before time.”
