Checking Employees’ Right to Work

posted 17/07/2019 - 10:39

Every UK employer, private and public sector, must check that workers have the right to work in the UK. Compliance is no simple matter; you must check every prospective worker, and for some workers you must repeat the check every 12 months. In addition, the Government has working restrictions on nationals from certain countries. Employers must be aware of any conditions that affect lawful employment of a migrant worker – conditions that can affect the type of work they are able to do.

Serious consequences

To put the problem into perspective, there are many variations on the British passport alone, and 193 officially recognised UN countries.

The consequences of non-compliance carry significant risks:

  • A fine of up to £20,000 per illegal employee
  • Adverse press coverage
  • Naming and shaming on the UKBA website
  • Significant damage to a hard won reputation

TemcoUK Facility Services demonstrates its commitment to the highest levels of service for clients by using one of the world’s leading reference systems to provide its employee right to work checks.

Virtually eliminating risk

“This is an area where there is no room for complacency,” says Andrew Philpot, TemcoUK’s Managing Director, “Those who wish to cheat the system are getting smarter every year, so it is vital to ensure that we have the best possible system that checks and holds documentation correctly. This provides the Statutory Excuse required by the UK Visas and Immigration, but also goes further, with verifications virtually eliminating risk to ensure our clients are provided with staff that have the right to work.”

“Our provider is a specialist provider of verification solutions that allows international organisations to authenticate ID documents and banknotes.” He adds, “They maintain the largest identity document database in the world, used by a wide range of private and public sector organisations, including UK Visas and Immigration.”
