Cleaning and Your Bottom Line

posted 30/01/2019 - 12:18

Cleaning is not the first thing one thinks about when considering an organisation’s bottom line, but poorly executed, it will have a serious negative impact. Get it right and you set a company up to excel.

In general terms, cleaning has a significant impact on the wellbeing of staff, affecting hygiene and health of course, but also morale, and hence productivity; dirt and disorder are distracting and depressing – they distract staff and make them unhappy. If their employer does not care why should they?

Then take the manufacturer. From food and pharma, to electronics and engineering, poor cleaning can adversely affect product quality and productivity, either through direct contamination or by affecting the performance of machinery. And do not forget the need for order in these environments; untidiness can cause serious accidents when machinery is in operation.

At the corporate level, like law firms and accountants, the focus is inevitably upon the client experience, so standards must be commensurately high. Overflowing bins, dirty floors and walls, unclean and unstocked washrooms, streaky screens and windows do not inspire confidence in the professionals that work in such an environment.

In all these businesses, efficient cleaning has an encouraging effect upon morale, making staff feel valued and positive about their surroundings. This is particularly important in sectors where staff performance and retention is critical, such as financial services. The cost of keeping work stations clean and germ free is quickly offset by the loss of income from a member of staff who can’t make it in because of flu.

Some of this might sound like a statement of the obvious, but TemcoUK’s managers never cease to be surprised by the number, and profile, of companies where standards have slipped to an alarming level.

“Cleaning impacts on every type of organisation, at every level, of course,” Says Andrew Philpot, TemcoUK’s Managing Director. “But one of our best examples of the benefits came a client from the public sector. “They link the standard of cleaning inextricably with the standard of service they provide. They nurture a Culture of Excellence and use the standard of cleaning as one of the indicators of whether they are achieving that. The result is a school environment that sets standards for all its achievements, that is exemplary, especially when compared to other schools where cleaning is kept to the bare minimum.”
