National Living Wage – Are You Ready for 2020?

posted 10/11/2017 - 07:20

You will be aware that the National Living Wage (NLW) increased to £7.50 per hour on 1 April this year, with the intention of raising it to £9 by 2020 in increments.

TemcoUK welcomes this move and believes it will have a positive impact on their staff and the quality of service they can provide.

“This development is in line with TemcoUK’s business model for the past 16 years,” says Andrew Philpot, TemcoUK’s Managing Director, “Traditionally the cleaning industry has paid low wages, resulting in poor productivity, but we have always operated on the basis that higher pay gives us the ability to recruit and retain better staff who will be more productive. This then creates a more loyal and reliable workforce, reducing ongoing recruitment and training costs and reducing disruption.”

“We do have one major concern though,” Andrew adds, “Having spoken to several clients about the impact of the rises over the next three years it has become clear that they have not considered the effect on pay differentials.

Obviously there is going to be an impact as the proposed NLW for 2020 is going to be more than several existing higher pay grades. Ideally any changes where differentials are impacted will be made gradually and there is still time, but this issue cannot be ignored.”

Andrew adds that TemcoUK will be happy to discuss any issues arising from the National Living Wage.
